Introduction

The ever-evolving COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably left an indelible mark on the world, affecting people’s lives in profound ways. In a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, we learn the complex landscape of COVID infections, from first-time cases to the unsettling phenomenon of reinfections. With the latest data from a nationally representative sample of 1,636 U.S. adults, interviewed online in September 2023, we aim to shed light on the prevalence of reinfections, the potential underreporting of cases, and the looming question of what lies ahead.

The Prevalence of Reinfections

According to the poll, 32% of adults reported having had COVID-19 at least once. What’s striking, however, is that 15% of respondents claim to have experienced the virus two or three times. This raises a critical question: Can individuals truly contract COVID more than once, and if so, what implications does this have for our understanding of immunity and public health?

The survey’s data reveals that 12% of respondents said they’ve been infected twice, while 3% reported experiencing the virus on three separate occasions.
